The Day Everything Changed in Maricopa, Arizona

When founder Shawn Jordan first started Universal Roofing Specialists, he came across a home on the outskirts of Maricopa that stopped him in his tracks.

The roof was severely damaged—large sections were missing entirely, leaving the home exposed to Arizona’s extreme heat, monsoon storms, and water intrusion. Inside the home lived a family on a fixed income who had no realistic way of affording a roof replacement.

The situation was urgent. Every storm made the home more vulnerable.

That moment became the foundation of everything that followed.

A Roof Replacement That Became a Community Mission

Months later, Shawn partnered with a local general contractor to find a way to help. Together, they committed to completing a full roof replacement using donated materials and volunteer labor.

What happened next was something no one expected.

Instead of a small roofing project, it became a full community roof restoration effort in Maricopa, AZ.

Between 35 to 40 volunteers showed up—homeowners, neighbors, and local community members—all stepping in to help however they could. A simple roof replacement turned into a movement driven by compassion and urgency.

When a Fire Station Showed Up to Help

During the project, the local fire station chief visited the home and personally donated $800 to support additional repairs inside the property.

The home had suffered significant interior damage due to roof leaks, including black mold in the upstairs bedroom.

That donation helped expand the scope of the project beyond roofing and into true home restoration.

What followed included:

• Full roof replacement and structural roof repairs

• Bathroom restoration

• Bedroom repair and mold remediation support

• Pantry and interior home improvements

• Exterior cleanup and landscaping restoration

• Assistance improving overall household safety and livability

By the end of the project, it was no longer just a roof—it was a restored home.

The Birth of the Home Depot Roof Relief Initiative

That experience became the official beginning of what is now known as the Home Depot Roof Relief Initiative by Universal Roofing Specialists.

The mission is simple: identify Arizona families facing financial hardship or unsafe roofing conditions and provide real, lasting solutions through roof repair or full roof replacement.

What started as one project in Maricopa has grown into an ongoing community initiative that continues to help families across Arizona.

As the impact of the program spread, Home Depot learned about the work being done in Arizona communities.

Today, Home Depot has officially partnered with Universal Roofing Specialists to help supply materials for select Roof Relief Initiative projects.

This partnership has made it possible to expand the reach of the program and assist more families with free or donated roof replacements and emergency roof repairs across Arizona.
